How I Got Here

My name is Robert Wilson. I didn't grow up dreaming of being a breeder. I joined the Navy, served my time, and in 2003 a serious injury changed the direction of my life. I lost most of my hearing. I spent two months in a coma. When I came out of it, the world was different — quieter, harder to navigate, and I had to figure out who I was all over again.

What got me through wasn't a program or a plan. It was dogs. Specifically, Catahoulas. I'd been around the breed for years, but during recovery they became something more. They were steady when I wasn't. They didn't need me to hear them — they just needed me to show up. That kind of quiet loyalty gets under your skin.

"Resilience isn't about bouncing back. It's about getting up every day and doing the work — same as this breed has done for centuries."

When I got out of the service, I started looking at the Catahoula landscape and didn't like what I saw. Fewer people were breeding for the right reasons. The dogs were getting watered down — less drive, less nerve, less of what made them Catahoulas in the first place. I decided to do something about it.

Humble Catahoula Kennels wasn't a business plan. It was a response. I wanted to preserve the breed the way it was supposed to be — sound, capable, clear-headed. Not a lot of dogs. Not a lot of litters. Just the right ones, done the right way.

I don't call myself a "premium breeder." I'm a guy in Louisiana who takes this seriously. If you want a Catahoula that looks good on Instagram, there are other places. If you want a dog with the working ability, temperament, and health background this breed deserves — that's what I'm here for.

Every litter is planned. Nothing is accidental. I focus on:

  • ✦ Health-tested bloodlines, fully documented
  • ✦ Temperament that fits the breed standard
  • ✦ Puppies raised in my home, not a kennel
  • ✦ Working ability preserved, not bred out

I turn down more people than I accept. That's not arrogance — it's honesty. Catahoulas aren't for every household, and I'd rather wait for the right match than place a puppy in a home that's not ready for what this breed brings.

Because of my hearing, phone calls don't work for me. Everything goes through email, text, or message. I know that's not the norm, but it actually works better — there's a record, nothing gets lost, and I can give you a thoughtful answer instead of a rushed one. It's not a limitation. It's just how I do things.

A Note From Me
Thanks for reading this far. Most people skip to the puppy pictures. The fact that you're here tells me you're serious — and that's the kind of home I'm looking for. If you want to talk about a puppy, or just want to learn more about the breed, reach out. I'll write you back.

Take care,
Robert Wilson
